Still waiting.. (Photo via swarmandsting.com) |
Here's the tweet from @GreedyNBAstards that inspired the PSEC:
"How's it feel to be apart of ruining the best game in the world? NBA owners/players don't give a damn about fans and guess what? Fans provide all the money you're fighting over you greedy ass pigs."
This was directed at Miami Heat owner Mickey Arison, who replied that Mr. NBAstards was "barking at the wrong owner." This tweet earned Arison a $500K fine from the NBA for breaking away from the Sternian circle of strength.
I'm not trying to focus on this tweeted interaction, but the fan's message. The owners and players do not care about the game like the fans do. So why don't the fans take matters into their own hands? The creation of the PSEC will give all the sports heads in North America a voice and feel like they are making a difference.
As founder of this new Collective, my first order of business will be acquiring a lawyer that knows the pro sport business, who's respected in the game and can break it down in layman's terms for us knuckleheads. With the first pick, the PSEC select Eric Macramalla. Eric appears on quite a few radio shows across Canada and has a great sports law blog called Offside. Not only is he a lawyer, but he's a big sports fan (according to the bio on his site). Eric as General Counsel for PSEC is a Dominique Wilkins tomahawk slam dunk.
The Collective will need a Board of Fans (BOF) to represent the major sports leagues in North America. What better place to start than with your favorite bloggers! The NHL will be represented by yours truly, Paqman. Your boy Turnbull will sack the NFL chair. As for the NBA, I nominate the editor of Yahoo's Ball Don't Lie Kelly Dwyer. His blog is tight and so will be his term on the board. Dwyer has tons of work ahead of him with this lockout still looming. Last but not least, Scott Cullen will be all about MLB. Cullen is a jack of all trades (his Numbers Game articles on TSN are amazing), and understands baseball. Extra base hit: he's a numbers guy which is a must for your BOF.
So there you have it. This team will be the fan's voice. With the NHL collective bargaining agreement coming to an end after this season, the timing for this Collective is perfect. The PSEC will fight against higher ticket prices, disruptive work stoppages, and will keep teams honest. We will audit their financials. We will mediate any stalemates between owners and players. We will get this right. No fan should be left on the sideline when his favorite sport is taken away from him.
The PSEC: Fans Fighting For Fans
So, who's in?
