Fitz & The Tantrums Bring Back the Soulful Sounds of Yesteryear

Los Angeles-based funk/soul band Fitz & The Tantrums have had a breakout year, and they're poised for even bigger success moving forward.

The six-piece is fronted by vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick, who formed the band in 2008.  After purchasing a old electric piano for $50, Fitz immediately wrote the song "Breakin' the Chains of Love" and was instantly inspired to form a band.

To complete the lineup, Fitzpatrick reached out to an old college friend, and several other players that he knew from working in the LA music scene as a sound engineer.

Their debut album Pickin' Up the Pieces has drawn critical praise, and even reached #1 on Billboard Magazine's Top Heatseekers chart.

Several magazines and bloggers have also named them "the hardest working band" of the 2011 festival circuit.  I had the chance to catch them earlier this year when they stopped in Toronto for a set at the Opera House, and they did not disappoint.

If you're looking for a modern take on the classic, soulful, Motown-era sound, but with a dash of catchy pop and funky horns, then make sure Fitz & The Tantrums is in your listening mix.
