Super 8
A blockbuster sci-fi movie is always a treat. An Abrams monster movie is a must. Super 8 is co-produced by Steven Spielberg and features a group of kids from a small town who are making a movie using a Super 8 camera. Yeah...sounds like a face melter, right? Throw in a peaceful alien which has been repeatedly abused for years by the American Military (will these antagonists ever learn?) and you've got yourself some cinematic fuel for the fire. The "human" side of this story can at times feel like it's slowing down the pace but does tie itself into a lovely bow at its conclusion.
Abrams has become a Viral Hero in the motion picture game. He has leveraged the internet (and its inhabitants) to promote his upcoming releases with great success. The Cloverfield campaign comes to mind. He has a knack for creating that buzz which elevates the whole movie going experience.
Abrams directed the latest Star Trek movie. This reboot was visually incredible and straight up wicked. He's signed up to crank out a second one which he'll start working on soon. Hopefully Kirk will hit up that green lady of space.
Fringe
It's back! This year's premiere dropped us back into the confusing parallel universe with tons of questions that will not come to light until the last 5 minutes of the season. Walter Bishop, Olivia Dunham and Phantom Peter Bishop return in the previously proclaimed best show on network TV (by yours truly). Abrams isn't heavily involved in this gem, but does have co-creator credits which is good enough for me.
Person Of Interest
This show has some potential. Only one episode has aired to date in this promising series. Michael Emerson (Baddie from Lost. Well he was bad until I stopped watching the show. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT KILLER MECHANICAL CLOUD??!!) and Jim Caviezel (Portrayed JC in the Passion of the Christ) are starring as teammates that attempt to save the world thanks in part to a machine that can predict the future. Caviezel is Jack Bauer 2.0 in Person Of Interest as his character John Reese is a former CIA field officer with deadshot aim. This one is executive produced by Abrams.
These were the elements that made up my J.J. Abrams week. This guy has a nose for the goods. A terribly talented fella who consistently brings greatness with every swing. He's a director, screen writer, producer, and composer. He wrote the theme music for Alias, Lost and Fringe. Amazing. His production company, Bad Robot, seems well respected and keeps dishing out great pictures. I would tell you to keep an eye out for Abrams, but you've without a doubt enjoyed some of his previous work. He's been around for a minute with no intent of warping out of here.
