The Worm during his Chicago Bulls tenure (photo via ongo.com) |
You don't picture a guy like Rodman getting a lot of consideration for such an honour, given his anti-conservative image and lack of flashy offensive skills during his playing days. But the guy's resume is pretty damn impressive.
The Worm's career highlights include winning 5 NBA Championship rings: 3 with the Chicago Bulls and 2 with the Bad Boys AKA Detroit Pistons. He also lead the Association in Rebounds for a record 7 straight seasons, is a 2-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award winner, and made the NBA All-Defensive team 7 times.
Regarding the induction, a stunned Rodman said "I thought it was a joke. I never dreamed of this. I never thought of being in the Hall of Fame ... When I played, I did my job, had fun, and entertained the crowd. This right here, I'm trying to soak it all in."
Rodman's colourful personality stood out both on and off the court. He was known for his unorthodox playing style, which included running up and down the court with his knees up and jumping around on his tippy-toes, enticing the crowd by raising his fists as he ran up and down the floor. His multi-coloured hair styles, and numerous tattoos and piercings gained him considerable attention. The Worm is also known for his brief yet salacious relationship with Madonna, and at one time was married to celebrity/actress/pole-dancer Carmen Electra.
Dennis Rodman's NBA career was filled with so many memorable moments ... Here's a great sequence of plays by The Worm from the 1996 NBA Finals:
