Carney Of The Black Keys Talks Too Much

(Photo via buzzbox.com)
Ohhhh MAN! Turnbull and Ram are gonna be pissed at me for writing this! Patrick Carney of the Black Keys talks waaaaayyyy too much...and all the shit that comes out of his mouth is negative. This is disappointing since they have been riding on a high over the last few years, which if your keeping score, is positive. I held back when he quoted off about not making their new album El Camino available on streaming services, which surely resulted in illegal downloads. But beefing with Nickleback for no apparent reason?

From the Rolling Stone interview when asked about the state of rock and roll:

"Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world… So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit – therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. Fuck that! Rock & roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don't like to see it fucking ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit. When people start lumping us into that kind of shit, it's like, 'Fuck you,' honestly."

Fuck You, Carney. Instead of bitching about other artist's work, promote your own music and cats that you consider "rock & roll". Is he being quotatious to get more people onto his shit? I would say yes. If this is the Black Keys M.O., I'm out. I'm not stating that he doesn't have a right to an opinion, but hating on another artist is lame (click here and read #2). To set the record straight, I'm not in the "Nickleback defense business" since I'm not a fan. I did enjoy their earlier work (basically anything before Silver Side Up) and I have mad respect for them. They are extremely successful while expanding their fan base with each release. Jealousy is love and hate at the same time. Hate on hater.

You see, I can hang with a dude like Kanye West because craziness comes out of his mouth with purpose. All of his awesome public meltdowns were in defense of things he believes in. Beyonce's Single Ladies, the victims of Katrina. He doesn't spit negativity about anyone and everyone says HE has an attitude problem.

Since the mood of this post is somewhat negative, I'll pour it on a bit more. Mr. Carney, you claim to be a "rock and roll" purist, but you're a sellout. Hope you're enjoying your car commercial money while you keep it real. This guy is pissing me off so much! Carney also called Rush "annoying" in an interview with Pitchfork which is nuts. I know Getty Lee's voice can get under your skin at times, but this band's influence and popularity are far reaching. So this dude either really hates Canadian bands or is an asshole. I'll pick the latter. Or can I pick both?

  3. If Tyler the Creator or one of the Gallagher brothers woulda made the same comments about Nickelback, no one would've batted an eyelash. It's just because Pat Carney doesn't fit the mold of a musician who would make these kinds of comments that make this somewhat shocking. I personally know many, many people that would agree with him, myself NOT included....I have never bothered to jump on the Nickellback hate train. Never understood why peeps bother to hate them so much. These statements will alienate the Keys from potential fans just because they are unnecessary, just like it was unnecessary for Kanye to "interrupt" Taylor Swift. At the end of the day, just make really good music, that all I care about.

  4. The Black Keys are sellouts because their music was used in a car commercial? Would you consider Led Zepplin sellouts as well? I mean their songs were used in a Cadillac commercial...

  5. Zeppelin didn't act righteous and claim that they were rock & roll like Carney does. I never read about Bonham or Page claiming that Thin Lizzy was shit because they weren't what they considered rock. Don't act hard and do something that isn't "rocker real". That's my point...and Zeppelin didn't sellout when they were active on the scene in the 70s.

  7. Paq, I agree with you. But, you almost lost me at Kanye... seriously, your argument is strong without trying to use the poster boy for celebrity petulance and immaturity to back up your point. Nonetheless, I'll play ball, if only because it gives me another opportunity to lavish in great detail in a public forum what I truly think of Kanye West: He's an idiot. Moving on, then. I will definitely take heed and watch Mr. Carney more closely, especially since I just doubled down on my BK fanaticism by buying tix to the upcoming ACC show. May have to scalp them if he steps out of line again. Keep up the good fight, Paq.

  8. Thanks Ram! I'm glad you threw a comment up, since I didn't want the "big dumb idiot" proclamation to be the last one on this post. And we always dig your opinion on the blog!

The Ye comment was really about the selfish vs selfless argument. I know that alot of peeps don't feel Kanye because of his antics, but I believe he does it in defence of things/people he loves. So he gets a pass from me until he does some stupid selfish hating bullshit like Carney.
